The BlackBerry Torch 9800 combines a Storm2-style touchscreen with a traditional BlackBerry QWERTY keypad to give users the best of both worlds. The Torch also introduces the new BlackBerry 6 operating system, which is designed to keep RIM competitive with the current crop of high-end smartphones. The Torch shows a bit more effort than some recent BlackBerry devices, and the rumours are that there’s an interesting looking QWERTY clamshell phone in the works too. There’s a 3.2″ 360 x 480 pixel touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera with...

The Samsung Ch@t comes with a 2.6″ 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen display, a slide-out QWERTY keypad, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Social networking support includes Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and others, and usefully the Ch@t’s built-in WiFi means that these sites can be accessed without incurring data charges. The QVGA resolution display might be OK for social networking sites, but it’s not much use for web surfing, and two megapixel cameras are frankly out of date.

The LG Optimus One features and connects seamlessly to the world according to Google™. Its ability to connect effortlessly to Google’s Android Market™ delivers an unfiltered and genuine smartphone user experience. Also, a convenient user interface and diverse multimedia options ensure a mobile environment that makes this device one of the easiest to use on the market. LG say that they hope to launch 10 Android devices by the end of the year, but if they all have the same black slabby looks as these three Optimus phones, then their range is going to...

The tiny hard disk is gone and has been replaced by a 16 gig flash drive, the OS is now Windows Mobile 6.1 and the removable keyboard has been redesigned. The Samsung Captivate is AT&T’s first high end, superphone running Android.AT&T changed the standard Galaxy S design from the overseas model that shipped before our US versions. Overall, that’s not a bad thing. While the Galaxy S looks sleek and is incredibly slim (nearly as slim as the iPhone 4), the plastic back looks a little cheap and it attracts fingerprints at an alarming rate. It’s also a little slippery to hold thanks to the iPhone 3GS-style tapered design. AT&T’s version has a metal back with an attractive pattern and the side...

LG Ally The LG Ally is the latest Android smartphone to join Verizon’s lineup. Though the LG has fairly high end specs, it doesn’t get the Droid designation (we’re not sure what’s up with that Droid thing). It has a 3.2″, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch pinch zooming, an accelerometer and Android OS 2.1 Eclair. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard is roomy and better than the Moto Droid’s and call quality is tops. The phone has WiFi, Bluetooth, a GPS that works with Google Maps (no VZ Navigator here) and a 3.2...
The Droid X and the EVO 4G are packing some serious heat. Both rock a 4.3-inch display. Both have an applications processor clocked at 1Ghz. And, both have HDMI-out ports that will allow you to stream videos from your phone to an external monitor or TV in full 720p HD resolution (with audio, no less – video demo here). Droid X is a larger phone. It’s thinner, for the most part (camera bulge notwithstanding), than the EVO, but it’s also taller. It’s not too much taller, but it does make a difference when putting an already sizable smartphone slab in...

The Samsung I8520 is a high-end smartphone with a large screen, WiFi, GPS, 3.5G support plus one very unusual feature – a built-in projector. At the moment, Samsung are not saying exactly what operating system the I8520 runs, but the rumours are that this is an Android 2.1 handset that has been given the new TouchWiz 3.0 interface, making it look very much like the Bada-based Wave S8500.There’s a large 3.7″ 800 x 480 pixel Super AMOLED display dominating the front of the I8520, which is the same type of new technology that the Wave uses....

Samsung Wave 2 handsets sport a 3.2″ 400 x 240 pixel display, a 3 megapixel camera, FM radio, 3.5mm audio socket, GPS and WiFi (including 802.11n), but it doesn’t support 3G or 3.5G connectivity. However, the Wave 2 handsets can operate in a no-SIM mode which presumably means that it can be used as mini Internet tablets if you have a WiFi connection. Of course, there’s also Bluetooth support and USB connectivity as well.

The LG Optimus One, or to give it it’s full title the LG Optimus One with Google™ isLG Optimus One havs 3.8 touchscreens and an OMAP 3630 processor. Perhaps a bit more interesting is the upcoming LG Optimus Android tablet due. LG say that they hope to launch 10 Android devices by the end of the year, but if they all have the same black slabby looks as these three Optimus phones, then their range is going to look something like a monumental masons exhibition. Apparently LG’s aim in this explosion of devices is to offer consumers a choice: “At...

The Nokia N8 includes GPS and a digital compass. Nokia bundle free navigation software with many of their devices, and the N8 is no exception. If used with a car mount, then the N8 would make a very capable satellite navigation device. The most prominent feature of the N8 is the 3.5″ 360 x 640 pixel capacitive OLED touchscreen display. The display isn’t as high resolution as the 800 pixel wide panels found in some high-end rivals. The 12 megapixel camera on the back has a Xenon flash, Carl Zeiss optics and can capture HD 720p video. Crucially,...

AT&T announced that they will carry Dell’s first smartphone in the US, the Dell Aero is a GSM / UMTS version of the Dell Mini 3 .This is an Android handset with a custom interface co-designed by AT&T and Dell. Specifications are pretty vague at the moment, but the Aero does have a 3.5″ 360 x 640 pixel display, 5 megapixel camera, 3G and WiFi support plus...

The Commtiva Sola comes in either a dual-band 900 / 1800 or 850 / 1900 version, and can optionally have GPRS support, in which case it comes with a WAP 2.0 browser. It weighs around 90 grams and measures 105 x 45 x 16mm.There’s no Bluetooth or digital camera on the Sola, but that sort of thing will just drain the battery. On a full charge, the Sola should give over three hours of talktime and about 10 days standby time.
